Masters of Sloyd is back in 2026!

Looking for something interesting for the long winter evenings? The free webinar series Masters of Sloyd returns starting Thursday, 8 January 2026. In this series, craftspeople share their work online via Zoom, give demonstrations, and there is plenty of room for questions.

What is Masters of Sloyd?

Masters of Sloyd is a live webinar series in which (inter)national makers, craftspeople, and experts share their knowledge and working methods. Each session focuses on a specific topic—ranging from materials and tools to techniques and history—with explanations, examples, and time for questions.

Masters of Sloyd grew out of my curiosity about traditional crafts and the people who still practise them today. I believe it’s valuable to share this knowledge, because these crafts can bring us closer to nature and to each other. The speakers contribute their time entirely voluntarily, and participation is free for everyone.

Speakers and topics

The webinars take place (almost) every other Thursday evening at 20:30. This is the programme for this sixth season:

  • Thursday, 8 January 2026 – Wild Wood & Eternal Forests by Bert Maes
About “wild” wood, why it matters, and how we can protect it better. Includes a short presentation, the film Eternal Forests, and time for questions.
  • Thursday, 22 January 2026 – Woodcraft for Wellbeing by Alex Finberg
About woodcarving and wellbeing: stress, mental health, community, and inclusivity in craft. (English, with the option of Dutch subtitles.)
  • Thursday, 5 February 2026 – The Mora 105 and Knife Handles by Jan Harm ter Brugge
The story behind the Mora 105, plus demonstrations: a birch-bark sheath and how to fit a handle to a blade. (Dutch, translation available.)
  • Thursday, 26 February 2026 – Pole Lathe Turning by Robin Wood
About traditional foot-powered woodturning and how Robin brought this nearly vanished craft back to life. (English, with the option of Dutch subtitles.)
  • Thursday, 12 March 2026 – The Cooper’s Craft by Martinus van de Wal
About coopers: making and maintaining wooden barrels and buckets—an old craft that is still indispensable, among other things for whisky and certain beers.
