We werken er allemaal mee: hout. Maar wat weten we eigenlijk écht over hout? En hoe ‘natuurlijk’ zijn onze bomen en bossen vandaag de dag? Iemand die dat als geen ander kan uitleggen is de ecoloog Bert Maes. Al meer dan 30 jaar onderzoekt hij wilde bomen en struiken — en de resultaten zijn verbluffend. Wilde soorten blijken nog maar in minder dan 3% van onze bossen en houtwallen voor te komen.

Wat is een ‘wilde’ boom of struik precies? Waarom zijn deze soorten zo belangrijk? En hoe kunnen we ze beter beschermen?

Met deze vragen trappen we Masters of Sloyd af met een avond volledig in het teken van hout. Dit webinar pakken we het iets anders aan dan anders: op donderdagavond 8 januari 2026 beginnen we met een korte presentatie over het historische gebruik van bomen en struiken in de afgelopen 10.000 jaar. Daarna kijken we samen naar een vertoning van de film “Eeuwige Bossen” en aansluitend is er de gelegenheid voor vragen.

Masters of Sloyd

Masters of Sloyd is een webinarserie waarin makers online via Zoom vertellen over hun ambacht. Masters of Sloyd is ontstaan vanuit mijn eigen belangstelling om meer te weten te komen over oude ambachten en de mensen die ze nu nog beoefenen. Ik vind het mooi om die kennis te helpen verspreiden in de moderne wereld, omdat ik geloof dat deze ambachten de hedendaagse mens, de producten die ze gebruikt en de natuur weer wat dichter bij elkaar kunnen brengen.

De sprekers tijdens Masters of Sloyd geven hun presentaties belangeloos en deelnemen is voor iedereen gratis. Wil je meedoen, schrijf je dan hieronder in! Wild trees and shrubs | Bert Maes

We all work with it: wood. But what do we actually really know about wood? And how ‘natural’ are our trees and forests today? Few can explain this better than ecologist Bert Maes. For more than 30 years, he has been studying wild trees and shrubs—and the findings are astonishing. Wild species now appear in less than 3% of our forests and hedgerows.

So what exactly is a ‘wild’ tree or shrub? Why are these species so important? And how can we protect them better?

With these questions, we kick off Masters of Sloyd with an evening entirely devoted to wood. This webinar will be slightly different from the usual format: on Thursday evening, 8 January 2026, we’ll begin with a short presentation on the historical use of trees and shrubs over the past 10,000 years. Then we’ll watch the dutch film Eeuwige Bossen together, followed by room for discussion.

What is Masters of Sloyd?

Masters of Sloyd is a free live webinar series in which makers share their craft online via Zoom. The series grew out of my own curiosity about traditional crafts and the people who still practise them today. I think it’s important to help pass this knowledge on, because I believe these crafts can bring people, the products they use, and nature a little closer together again.

The speakers in Masters of Sloyd give their talks voluntarily, and participation is completely free so that everyone can join. If you’d like to support Masters of Sloyd, you can make a donation at the end of the webinar.
