Julia Kalthoff van Kalthoff Axes is een Zweedse bijlenmaker. Haar houtsnijbijlen staan bekend als topkwaliteit en worden over de hele wereld verkocht. Julia komt dus bij Masters of Sloyd vertellen over haar bijlen.

Wat maakt een goede bijl?

Wat maakt een goede bijl? De vorm, het materiaal, de snede, het handvat. Hoe breng je dat in balans? En hoe helpt de bijl, één van de eerste gereedschappen van de mens, de hedendaagse mens weer in verbinding te komen met de wereld?

Julia leerde smeden bij de bekende Zweedse bijlenfabrikant Gränsfors Bruk en werkte daarna bij de andere grote Zweedse bijlenmaker Wetterlings, waar ze zelfs CEO was. Nu werkt ze op kleine schaal voor zichzelf in haar werkplaats in Stockholm, waar ze haar eerste productiebijl maakt: de Small Carver 01. Voor vele lepelsnijders en vershoutbewerkers is deze bijl hét favoriete stuk gereedschap (of staat het bovenaan het verlanglijstje). Ook geeft Julia jaarlijks vele workshops om haar liefde voor de bijl en het werken met de bijl over te brengen op andere mensen.

Masters of Sloyd is ontstaan vanuit mijn eigen belangstelling om meer te weten te komen over oude ambachten en de mensen die ze nu nog beoefenen. Ik vind het mooi om die kennis te helpen verspreiden in de moderne wereld, omdat ik geloof dat deze ambachten de hedendaagse mens, de producten die ze gebruikt en de natuur weer wat dichter bij elkaar kunnen brengen.

Julia Kalthoff (Kalthoff Axes) comes to Masters of Sloyd to talk about her axes. What makes a good ax? The shape, the material, the cut, the handle. How do you balance those? And how does the axe, one of man’s first tools, help modern man reconnect with the world? 

About Julia Kalthoff

Julia Kalthoff is a leading Swedish axe maker. Her wood carving axes are known worldwide as top quality. Julia learned to forge at the well-known Swedish axe manufacturer Gränsfors Bruk and then worked at the other major Swedish axe maker Wetterlings, where she became CEO.

Now she works on a small scale for herself in her workshop in Stockholm, where she makes her first production axe: the Small Carver 01. For many spoon carvers and fresh woodworkers, this axe is the favorite tool (or is it at the top of the wish list). Julia also gives many workshops every year to transfer her love for the axe and working with the axe to other people.
