Robin Wood is een begrip in de houtsnijwereld. Velen kennen hem — samen met Barn the Spoon – als een van de organisatoren van Spoonfest in Engeland. Ook brengt hij onder de naam Wood Tools houtsnijgereedschap op de markt. Toch is Robin misschien wel het meest bekend als de man die het voetaangedreven houtdraaien nieuw leven inblies in Engeland.

Na het overlijden van de laatste traditionele draaier was dit ambacht decennialang verdwenen. Robin bracht het terug met veel uitzoeken en proberen. Daarnaast dook hij diep in de geschiedenis: hij maakte replica’s van historische vondsten, waaronder stukken uit het scheepswrak van de Mary Rose. Zijn werk is in diverse musea te zien.

Dankzij zijn inzet is dit bijna vergeten ambacht weer volledig hot and happening. Op donderdagavond 26 februari 2026 vertelt Robin Wood ons over zijn ontdekkingsreis door de wereld van traditioneel houtdraaien – van historische research tot het opnieuw opbouwen van een levend ambacht.

Wat is Masters of Sloyd?

Masters of Sloyd is een gratis live webinarserie waarin makers online via Zoom vertellen over hun ambacht. Deze webinars zijn ontstaan vanuit mijn eigen belangstelling om meer te weten te komen over oude ambachten en de mensen die ze nu nog beoefenen. Ik vind het mooi om die kennis te helpen verspreiden in de moderne wereld, omdat ik geloof dat deze ambachten de hedendaagse mens, de producten die ze gebruikt en de natuur weer wat dichter bij elkaar kunnen brengen.

De sprekers tijdens Masters of Sloyd geven hun presentatie belangeloos en deelnemen is helemaal gratis, zodat iedereen kan meedoen. Wil je Masters of Sloyd steunen, dan kan heb je aan het eind van het webinar de mogelijkheid een donatie te doen.

Robin Wood is a well-known name in the world of woodcarving. Many people know him—together with Barn the Spoon—as one of the organisers of Spoonfest in England. He also produces and sells woodcarving tools under the brand Wood Tools. However, Robin is perhaps best known as the person who breathed new life into foot-powered woodturning in England.

After the death of the last traditional turner, the craft disappeared for decades. Robin brought it back through years of research, trial and error. He also delved deep into its history, making replicas of historical finds, including pieces from the wreck of the Mary Rose. His work can be seen in a number of museums.

Thanks to his efforts, this almost forgotten craft is thriving once again. On Thursday evening, 26 February 2026, Robin Wood will share his journey into the world of traditional woodturning—from historical research to rebuilding a living craft.

What is Masters of Sloyd?

Masters of Sloyd is a free live webinar series in which makers share their craft online via Zoom. The series grew out of my own curiosity about traditional crafts and the people who still practise them today. I think it’s important to help pass this knowledge on, because I believe these crafts can bring people, the products they use, and nature a little closer together again.
