Op 28 maart ga ik vertellen over een lepel die onderdeel is van een van de meest bekende heldenverhalen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. De reis om ‘De Noord’ met Willem Barentzs en Jacob Heemskerck in 1596. Hun schip raakte ingevroren en ze waren genoodzaakt om de winter te overleven op Nova Zembla.

Honderden jaren later is een fragment van een houten lepel gevonden tussen de restanten van hun Behouden Huys. Een fragment van deze lepel is in het bezit van het Rijksmuseum. Ik mocht deze lepel bestuderen en ik werk sindsdien aan het ontcijferen van deze lepel, zijn verhaal en natuurlijk het snijden van replica’s.

Het wordt een boeiend geschiedenisverhaal, maar ook een deep dive in het ontcijferen van een heel mooi, historisch lepelontwerp en het snijden van de replica.

Masters of Sloyd

Masters of Sloyd is een webinarserie waarin makers online via Zoom vertellen over hun ambacht. Masters of Sloyd is ontstaan vanuit mijn eigen belangstelling om meer te weten te komen over oude ambachten en de mensen die ze nu nog beoefenen. Ik vind het mooi om die kennis te helpen verspreiden in de moderne wereld, omdat ik geloof dat deze ambachten de hedendaagse mens, de producten die ze gebruikt en de natuur weer wat dichter bij elkaar kunnen brengen.

On March the 28th, I will talk about a spoon that is part of one of the most famous heroic stories in Dutch history. The voyage around ‘The North’ with Willem Barentzs and Jacob Heemskerck in 1596. Their ship became frozen in the ice and they were forced to survive the winter on Nova Zembla.

Hundreds of years later, a fragment of a wooden spoon was found among the remains of their ‘House of Refuse’. The fragment of this spoon is in the possession of the Rijksmuseum (State Museum). I was allowed to study this spoon and I have been working ever since on deciphering this spoon, its story and of course carving replicas.

It will be an exciting history story, but also a deep dive into deciphering a very beautiful, historical spoon design.

Masters of Sloyd is a webinar series in which makers talk about their craft online via Zoom. Masters of Sloyd arose from my own interest in learning more about traditional crafts and the people who still practice them today. I like to help spread that knowledge in the modern world, because I believe that these crafts can bring contemporary people, the products they use and nature closer together.
